MIRA Honors Victims of 2008 Raid in Laurel, MS

30 August 2010 No Comment

Laurel, MS — On August 25, 2010, a small group of people gathered to commemorate the second anniversary of a blow to civility, tolerance, justice, and freedom in Laurel, MS.  Two years ago, U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement agents descended on Howard Industries to rob 595 immigrants and migrant workers of their dignity and separate them from their families without warning or recourse.  For a second consecutive year, MIRA held a vigil for justice to remember those people and families whose lives were violently ripped apart under the guise of “law enforcement.”

About 65 people gathered in Daphne Park to remember the travesty of 2008 and to prepare for action against inevitable atrocities yet to come.  Those who seek to destroy the ideals upon which the United States was founded will not stop until fear and hate is felt within every person’s heart.  But we few at Daphne Park on Wednesday, August 25, gathered to say “no.”  We will not succumb to their scare tactics.  We will not waver in our pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness.

Though the group was small, its resolve remains unwavering.  Many sent their regrets due to work or family obligations, while others understandably feared backlash for attending.  However, dozens of attendees who would not have their lives and rights dictated by would-be oppressors chose to brave the hot August evening and stand up for freedom.

The vigil included heartfelt speeches by MIRA board member Father Jerry and Executive Director Bill Chandler.  MIRA organizer Ulises Hernandez provided information on the upcoming 2011 legislative session, and offered a plan of action for preserving our rights in the coming year.  A new and eloquent ally, Father Jose of Immaculate Conception in Laurel, delivered a vibrant “call to arms and conscience” to all Latinos, and indeed, all right-minded people.  Attendees also provided the audience with personal stories of heartache and inspiration.  The entire MIRA staff collaborated to host the event, with organizer Paul Morris facilitating.  Together we stood against injustice, hate, and intolerance.  We shall never be deterred from obtaining our ultimate goal of humanity FOR ALL PEOPLE.
