MIRA Civic Engagement Day at the MS Capitol 2012
February 16, 2012
Join us for a day with legislators to discuss legislation concerning immigrants and other vulnerable populations in Mississippi. We must let our state legislators know that we are against any anti-immigrant legislation proposed during the 2012 MS legislative session (whether affecting undocumented or documented immigrants).
The United States government is charged with creating and implementing immigration laws, not state governments!!! Several anti-immigrant bills have ALREADY been introduced in the MS legislature including, but not limited to:
Senate Bill (SB) 2090 that requires everyone in Mississippi to prove their immigration status to law enforcement officials upon any stop http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/2012/pdf/history/SB/SB2090.xml;
SB 2022 that prohibits certain immigrant students from receiving financial assistance: http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/2012/pdf/history/SB/SB2022.xml;
SB 2089 that enhances employer sanctions and felony sanctions against immigrants: http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/2012/pdf/history/SB/SB2089.xml;
and SB 2232 that would nullify Jackson, Mississippi’s anti-racial and immigrant profiling ordinance: http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/2012/pdf/history/SB/SB2232.xml.When: February 22, 2012.
