Bad, Anti-Immigrant:

  • HB 67 by Rep. Becky Currie (R) Brookhaven- punitive E-Verify bill revises “Mississippi  Employment Protection Act”  of 2008 increases penalties and requires Attorney General & Secretary of State to enforce. (Jud. B) 
  • HB 198 by Rep. Becky Currie (R)- Expands human trafficking law to employers. (Jud. B) 
  • HB 321 by Rep. Becky Currie (R)- mandates that law enforcement officers to take photographs of certain persons with out valid drivers licenses. (Jud. B) 
  • HB 490 by Rep. Gary Chism (R) Columbus- attempt to prevent Federal pre-emption of  state  Laws and to “assert the sovereignty of the state under the Mississippi constitution of 1890. (Constitution)
  •  SB 2224 by Sen. Chris McDaniel (R) Ellisville- Stiffens how undocumented offenders are released to ICE for deportation. (Jud. A) 
  • SB2531 by Sen. Michael Watson (R) Pascagoula—“Immigration Reform Act of 2013”: Penalties for  false ID, crime of Transporting “illegal Aliens,” cooperation btw. all law enforcement, verify citizenship upon arrest, prohibits “non-cooperation” in sharing of sharing  information, etc.


Some good bills affecting immigrants:


  • SB 2274 by Sen. Hillman Frazier (D) Jackson—Would train Mississippi judges in  concerning the Federal  Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act. 
  • SB 2180 by Sen. Derrick Simmons (D) Greenville—Calls for increasing the maximum total which injured workers can receive under the Workers’ Compensation Law. 
  • SB 2280 by Sen. Hillman Frazier (D)—Repeals the so-called “Mississippi Employment Protection Act” of 2008, currently not enforceable (see HB 67 above). 
  • SB 2265 by Sen. Hillman Frazier (D)—Allows injured workers to select doctors of their choice. 
  • SB 2281 by Sen. Hillman Frazier (D)—Creates a separate Interpreters Fund in the Mississippi          Administrative Office of the Courts. There are very few certified court interpreters in our state.               
  • SB 2284 by Sen. Hillman Frazier (D)—Provides full university or college scholarship to high school               graduates who maintained a 3.0 grade point average regardless of immigration status.
