What Will Happen Should Senate Bill S. 744 Become Law?

The Dignity Campaign’s Response To The Immigration Reform Bill
As organizations participating in the Dignity Campaign for Immigration Reform Based on Human and Labor Rights, we are very concerned about the harsh impact the Senate’s immigration reform bill will have on immigrants.  Rather than ‘bring immigrants out of the shadows’ this bill will hold millions in an underclass, vulnerable to exploitation and relegated to the ranks of the working poor, with no access to basic services.  Millions will have no hope of receiving permanent legal status, let alone citizenship.

Supreme Court Strikes Down AZ Proof of Citizenship as Pre-Condition to Register to Vote

On June 17th, the US Supreme Court in a 7-2 decision (Thomas and Alito dissenting) held that the State of Arizona is pre-empted by the 1993 National Voter Registration Act from requiring persons to prove they are citizens as a precondition to registering to vote in federal elections.

A proposal called “comprehensive immigration reform” has been reported out of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to the full Senate to be debated and voted on. Meanwhile, the U.S House of Representatives is ponders what form their proposal will take. Concocted by a vast array of Washington, D.C., beltway interests, the proposal seems far removed from the lives of the people it claims to help.

State Rep. Gregory Holloway makes surprise visit at MIRA Community Circle Meeting in Hazlehurst, Miss.

Local immigrants in Hazlehurst recently had a surprise welcome visit by State Representative Gregory L. Holloway, Sr. at the Community Circle Meeting hosted by the Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance in Hazlehurst on Saturday, May 22nd. State Representative Holloway, Sr., a longtime friend and ally of the Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance and a key member of the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus, made the surprise visit at the local taqueria, enthusiastically encouraging the small gathering of Spanish-speaking immigrants to not be afraid to become more politically engaged in their local community.
