MIRA Organizer Juan Carlos and Representative Holloway encouraging the small gathering of Spanish-speaking immigrants to not be afraid to become more politically engaged in their local community

Représentant de l'État Holloway, Sr., who represents Mississippi House District 76-Clairborne, Copiah, Hinds Counties, spoke about his involvement in the Mississippi Legislature over the past 14 ans, and the different committees that he currently serves on in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Representative Holloway is the Vice Chairman of Universities and College Committee, and also serves on the Accountability, Efficiency, Transparency Committee, Ethics Committee, Rules Committee, and several other important committees in the Mississippi House of Representatives. This is crucial, because Representative Holloway has played a very important role in preventing a whole slew of anti-immigrant bills from coming to fruition here in Mississippi.

After speaking through the Spanish interpreter, Organizer Juan Carlos, Representative Holloway handed out his business card to all of those in attendance, telling the immigrants to not ever hesitate calling on him at his personal residence if they ever needed any assistance. After the meeting ended, Representative Holloway stayed to have lunch with the MIRA Organizers and immigrants in attendance, eating soft chicken tacos prepared and served by the Dos Hermanos Taqueria in Hazlehurst.

According to MIRA Lead Organizer Kathy Sykes, “The whole purpose of us going into various communities and having these meetings is to inform the local immigrants about their rights and responsibilities as aspiring citizens, and whenever an important legislator such as Representative Holloway can go out of his way to make a personal appearance at a meeting like this on a Saturday, well that was inspiring to folks in attendance. This was probably their first time ever to personally hear directly from a state legislator.”
