Violence Against Immigrants on the Rise

There’s a perception that immigrants (especially Latinos) carry cash. Not just a little cash, but several hundred dollars at a time. The perception is actually true in many cases, and that’s because most banks deny checking or savings accounts to anyone who does not have a social security number. As a result, many Latinos in our area have no way to manage their finances other than carrying their money, in cash form, in a wallet or purse.

Major Effort Underway in 2014 Legislative Session

The session began on January 7, but it’s still in the early stages, so there are many bills that have not yet been filed. Monday, January 20th is the deadline for bills to be filed, so we should have a better idea of exactly what we’re up against by the middle of next week. While we’ll likely be facing opposition from anti-immigrant camps, we believe that we can gain some serious ground for immigrants and workers in areas like healthcare, education, and worker’s compensation.

Civic Engagement Day January 22

Our annual Civic Engagement Day at the State Capitol is next Wednesday, January 22nd. Come help us defend Human Rights for All
We’ll meet at the MIRA office (612 N. State Street, Jackson MS) at 10:00 AM for an update and orientation on the legislative session. We’ll prepare material and statements for when we meet with legislators at the state Capitol in the afternoon.
We’ll provide a lunch at 11:30, and then begin walking over to the Capitol at 12:15. Shortly after that, we’ll be joined by our allies for a big …
