Chokwe Lumumba ¡Presente!

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, longtime friend & ally of MIRA, Passed Away February 25, 2014 at age 66. We are deeply saddened by this sudden, unexpected loss.Chokwe Lumumba has been an active part of MIRA since our founding in 2000. Up until he was elected Mayor he served as our Legal Counsel. Patricia Ice and Chokwe both graduated from Wayne State University School of Law (Chokwe was some years ahead of her). She first met him when he came to a picket line she was on, protesting discrimination against Black law students

2014 Mississippi Legislative Session: Proposals Attacking Immigrants & Proposals Helping Immigrants

Once again there are two anti-immigrant proposals— one introduced in the Mississippi House of Representatives and one introduced into the Mississippi Senate as the session began on January 7th.  HB 1322 by Rep Andy Gipson (R) of Braxton and SB 2655 par Sen. Michael Watson (R) of Pascagoula. These bills are another attempt by Tea Party Republicans to make life miserable for immigrants so they will leave the state.

Court Hearing for Assaulted Latino Family—Join us in Support

A hearing on a motion to suppress evidence before Judge Dan Jordan, at the new Federal Court building at 501 Et.
