Mississippi is flush with some of the very worst legislators for immigrant rights. We know that the fight over immigration is going to get ugly in 2015, and we desperately need your financial support to help us defend and expand immigrant rights.

Each year, we gather together with immigrants, friendly legislators, social justice and workers rights activists, and religious & community leaders for a Civic Engagement Day at the Mississippi state Capitol. It’s a time when we can make a public demonstration of the need for immigration reform, and a day when individual immigrants can approach lawmakers to tell their stories and make their needs clear. We always see good results from Civic Engagement Day – it’s always very clear to us that making that direct connection with lawmakers is crucial to the fight for immigrant rights in Mississippi. During Civic Engagement Day 2014, immigrant youth spoke with legislators and  sparked interest in in-state tuition for undocumented high school graduates, which resulted in a special hearing on the issue with a group of select legislators.

For Civic Engagement Day 2015, on Wednesday January 21st

, we plan to bring a group of immigrants and activists up from the Gulf Coast, and another group over from Carthage. In order to protect the safety of our participants, we always charter busses for their transportation (it’s unsafe for immigrants to travel long distances by car, due to the risk of racial profiling).

We need to raise about $2,500 to cover the cost of the bus charter, as well as food and drinks for our participants. We are at a critical moment in our funding and we need your help this year more than ever.

Can you help us in the fight for immigrant rights? Click here to donate in any amount– every dollar helps. DONATE NOW!
