Know Your Rights

Many workers are discouraged from reporting injuries or other workplace abuses, and are afraid to speak out because of retaliation or and the possibility of losing their jobs. This summer, MIRA is working with the Mississippi Alliance of State Employees (MASE / CWA) and the United Food and Commercial workers to conduct a series of Know Your Rights presentations that educate immigrants about their rights in the workplace and what to do about on-the-job injuries.

Voter Registration Drive

MIRA is a launching a concentrated voter-registration drive ahead of the October 2016 deadline to participate in the November general election. This election cycle stands to have tremendous impact for immigrants, travailleurs, and people of color in general, so it’s critical that we have strong voter turnout among these communities. Once our voter registration drive is complete, we’ll start with a targeted Get-Out-The-Vote effort.

Reduced Services for MS Public Workers

Nearly 300,000 Mississippians do not have healthcare as a direct result of the state’s refusal to use the federal dollars to expand Medicaid. En plus, the state has continued cutting funding for health services for its public workers. The latest in a series of nonsensical budget cuts was the decision to cut funding to the Health Department and the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. Both services were friendly to immigrants, and with the budget cuts, many fewer people will have access to critical prenatal and mental health services. …

NNIRR 30th Anniversary Celebration

MIRA is a part of the National Network of Immigrant and Refugee Rights, a coalition of organizations that focus on rights of migrants and refugees. This year marks the NNIRR’s 30th anniversary, and the MIRA team will be traveling to Oakland, California for the July 29th “Tearing Down Walls, Lifting Up Justice” celebration.
