Reduced Services for MS Public Workers

Nearly 300,000 Mississippians do not have healthcare as a direct result of the state’s refusal to use the federal dollars to expand Medicaid. In addition, the state has continued cutting funding for health services for its public workers. The latest in a series of nonsensical budget cuts was the decision to cut funding to the Health Department and the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. Both services were friendly to immigrants, and with the budget cuts, many fewer people will have access to critical prenatal and mental health services. The issue of proper funding for healthcare was one of our major pushes during the Legislative Session but our proposals did not make headway.
