Legislative Update: Victory against discriminatory SB 2306

When the legislature brought up SB 2306, we knew it was dangerous, bad for local communities, and bad for Mississippi. The bill aimed to create a limitless mandate on law enforcement agencies in the state to “assist” federal government in the enforcement of immigration laws, and it did so without providing any source of funding. It would have prohibited the establishment of sanctuary cities, and have exposed local agencies to series liability issues.

As a direct result of our Civic Engagement Day, protest actions with Cooperation Jackson and other allies, and an incredible letter of concern that was drafted and signed by forty faith and community leaders, we defeated Senate Bill 2306. The bill had been passed by the Senate but greatly modified in the House; the two sides could not come to agreement on the content of the bill, and it died when they reached an impasse.

We are grateful to all who stood with us for immigrant rights during the 2016 sessão legislativa. See the attached document below for the letter presented by the coalition of faith and community leaders.
