MIRA group at the DAPA / DACA hearing at the US Supreme Court

Agosto 5, 2016

In April, Melinda Medina and MIRA members Esequiel Gamboa, Jesus Mateos, and Jesus Mateos Jr traveled to Washington, DC along with the Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice (ACIJ) and Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition. They were present outside the US Supreme Court on the day that the DACA / DAPA case was argued, to show solidarity and support. Here are Melinda’s thoughts about that day:

"The rally took place right in front of the Supreme Court and MIRA volunteers raised funds so that we could take some supporters with us. There were about 4,500 people present and about a handful of tea party members but they could not silence the crowd.  It was a wonderful experience to see so many people gathered in one place in support of one thing and that was to bring relief to undocumented families. Desafortunadamente, the Supreme Court made a non-decision – that means that the programs remain blocked. This was a tremendous blow to the undocumented community.

“I think that day I got a better sense of what it means to fight in unity. The fight continues. We lost a small battle but there’s still a war going on. It’s not over – as long as there is a fighting chance we will fight.”
