Defend ‘Dreamers’

Phew! Don’t you feel better? And safer? And more principled?
No, we’re not talking about this community’s heroic response to Harvey. We’re responding, sarcastically, to President Donald Trump’s hypocritical decision regarding the Obama-era executive order known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. The order provides so-called Dreamers two-year work permits and a reprieve from deportation.
 On Tuesday, the president took the Pontius Pilate approach to the plight of DACA recipients, nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to this country as children.

State leaders comment on Trump’s decision to phase out DACA program

Some of Mississippi’s state leaders are commenting on President Donald Trump’s decision to phase out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions made the announcement Tuesday during a news conference.
President Trump said he isn’t going to just cut DACA off, but rather provide a window of opportunity for Congress to act.

Taking American jobs? A Labor Day look at the work immigrants do

She rises every morning in a home she once worked two jobs to keep. Cecilia Rivera bought her south Glenwood Springs house in 2006, two years before the Great Recession took its toll.
Rivera was laid off from her job and returned to cleaning houses — work she’d known for decades. She would sneak in a few hours of rest, and then arrive to her second job at the nearby Wal-Mart.

The future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (SI) program faces precarity as a recent report published by Politico indicated that Donald Trump may be terminating the vital program in the next few days. Although DACA remains in effect at the moment, thousands upon thousands of undocumented youthsfutures depends on Trump’s official announcement tentatively set for Tuesday. The program constitutes an undeniably cogent framework for immigrants who were brought to the United States when they were children.

Hoy, the Trump administration announced that they would rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (SI), a program that has provided temporary deportation relief to almost 800,000 people who came to the U.S. as children.  The Mississippi Immigrants’ Rights Alliance (MIRA) an organization that has worked for immigrant and refugee rights for nearly two decades, condemns the action.
