Phew! Don’t you feel better? And safer? And more principled?

No, we’re not talking about this community’s heroic response to Harvey. We’re responding, sarcastically, to President Donald Trump’s hypocritical decision regarding the Obama-era executive order known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. The order provides so-called Dreamers two-year work permits and a reprieve from deportation.

On Tuesday, the president took the Pontius Pilate approach to the plight of DACA recipients, nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to this country as children. He washed his hands ofthose incredible kids” (his words) and consigned their fate to an implacable and laughably dysfunctional Congress. If lawmakers don’t act within six months, the Trump administration will kill DACA outright, leaving Dreamers at risk of being cast out of the only country most of them have ever known.
