Die U.s. Department of Justice does not know the City of Jackson has a new mayor. In a letter addressed to Mayor Tony Yarber but dated Nov. 15, 2017, Acting Assistant Attorney General Alan Hanson asked the City of Jackson to review itssanctuary cityordinance in order to receive federal funds from the Office of Justice Programs going forward.

MIRA and Jackson officials respond to DOJ immigration laws accusation

The Capital City is in hot water with the U.S. Justice Department over federal immigration laws. Jackson received a letter demanding compliance, accusing them of immigration rule violations.
It is one of 29 jurisdictions being given just over two weeks to comply with immigration rules.
Thursday the Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance held a news conference responding to the Justice Department demands.
Not only is it an overt attack on immigrants but it is a covert attack on the City of Jackson, said MIRA Executive Director Bill Chandler.

The Department of Justice sent letters to 29 jurisdictions that may have laws, policies, or practices that violate, a federal statute that promotes information sharing related to immigration enforcement.
The Justice Department sent the letters Wednesday.

In April, President Trump had a message for the 800,000 young undocumented immigrants who were given permission to live in the U.S. under President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program: “The dreamers,” he said, “should rest easy.”
We now know that was a lie. In September, Trump announced he was ending the DACA program in six months, plunging nearly a million young immigrants’ lives into chaos. But Trump’s assault on DACA recipients began much earlier than previously known.

California becomes ‘sanctuary state’ in rebuke of Trump immigration policy

Under threat of possible retaliation by the Trump administration, Gov. Jerry Brown signed landmark “sanctuary state” legislation Thursday, vastly limiting who state and local law enforcement agencies can hold, question and transfer at the request of federal immigration authorities.
