Fifteen Percent is a Shockingly Small Number

15%– it is the proportion of voting age residents who cast ballots in the 25 states that held primaries in the first six months of this year. В 15 of those states, the turnout was the lowest ever.

September Advocacy Meeting Yields Important Results

Tension over immigration is ramping up again in Mississippi – spearheaded by Governor Bryant’s hateful stance towards the refugee children – and will likely come to a fever pitch during the 2015 Сессия законодательного собрания. Each fall, we begin planning, organizing, and mobilizing to fight back against the anti-immigrant camp, and this year is no exception. Our September Advocacy Meeting (which was held on the 10th of September) had a great turnout and we were able to take key steps towards preparation for the 2015 Legislature.

2014 Mississippi Legislative Session: Proposals Attacking Immigrants & Proposals Helping Immigrants

A report from the Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance (MIRA)
Once again there are two anti-immigrant proposals— one introduced in the Mississippi House of Representatives and one introduced into the Mississippi Senate as the session began on January 7th.  HB 1322 by Rep Andy Gipson (R) of Braxton and SB 2655 Сеном. Майкл Уотсон (R) of Pascagoula. These bills are another attempt by Tea Party Republicans to make life miserable for immigrants so they will leave the state.

Civic Engagement Day January 22

Our annual Civic Engagement Day at the State Capitol is next Wednesday, January 22nd. Come help us defend Human Rights for All
We’ll meet at the MIRA office (612 N. State Street, Jackson MS) на 10:00 AM for an update and orientation on the legislative session. We’ll prepare material and statements for when we meet with legislators at the state Capitol in the afternoon.
