Immigrant defense fund

A legal defense fund to support low-income immigrants and refugees targeted by the federal administration became available Monday.
Immigrants in detention, facing deportation or in danger of losing their immigration status who live or work in Seattle or live in King County and have a household income below 200 percent of the federal poverty level (less than $24,120 for a single adult or $49,200 for a family of four) can qualify for help through the Legal Defense Network assistance.

Like many of her clients, immigration attorney Dulce Garcia’s future in the U.S. is in a state of uncertainty.
Garcia was brought by her parents to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 6 Jahre. She is one of 230,000 undocumented immigrants in California who benefited from the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which the Trump administration rescinded Tuesday.

I took part in the AILA Annual Conference training for new chapter chairs, and as an ‘icebreaker,’ was asked to complete phrases handed out on little slips of paper. Mine read, “The best way to save….” I immediately responded, “One way to save a life is to be an immigration lawyer.”

“Here I’ll Stay” Documentary Showing

The new video focussing on the work of the Mississippi immigrants Rights Alliance (VISIER) entitiled “Here I’ll Stay” will debut on the Field of Vision website on June 8, 2017 bei 10 am EDT. The film producers and directors are Lorena Salazar and Marlene McCurtis.

Know Your Rights

Many workers are discouraged from reporting injuries or other workplace abuses, and are afraid to speak out because of retaliation or and the possibility of losing their jobs. This summer, MIRA is working with the Mississippi Alliance of State Employees (MASE / CWA) and the United Food and Commercial workers to conduct a series of Know Your Rights presentations that educate immigrants about their rights in the workplace and what to do about on-the-job injuries.

MIRA Legal Project Update

MIRA Legal Project Director, Attorney Patricia Ice, is working with several families on their immigration cases, which include applications for employment authorization, lawful permanent residence, temporary protected status, petitions for relatives, waivers for national visa center processing, and naturalization. The Legal Project charges fees for services in these cases.  Ice has focused the Legal Project’s work on administrative humanitarian and family based immigration cases. The immigration courts are in New Orleans and Memphis and the MIRA Legal Project does not have the resources to handle cases there due to time, distance

Notice Regarding Texas v United States

The MIRA is not surprised by the Temporary Injunction ruling by  Judge Andrew Hanen in the U.S. District Court in Brownsville, Texas yesterday against the implementation of the Obama Administrationsexecutive actions on prosecutorial discretion, but we STRONGLY disagree with that ruling. We  believe that the Texas judge made the wrong call and we are confident that the Executive Actions for expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (IF) and for Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) WILL be UPHELD and IMPLEMENTED soon.  The Department
