MS ID Protection Act needs to make sure that it steers clear of racial profiling. I have experienced first hand Hinds County deputies making the assumption that just because a person "looks" like they might be illegal that they are. ICE is contacted before driver has been given a fair opportunity to prove otherwise. Such assumptions are unfair, costly and stressful.

I believe that there sholud be some policies towards immigration today. Many people come to this country for better opportunities and lifestyles. However, I feel that immigration is not as important as it was back when people had to go through Ellis Island and take health exams before they entered the country. Numerous people come here illegally and people aren't checked thoroughly. If they found the slightest indication of a sickness, they were sent back to their home country. They might carry diseases that put our people in this country at stake. As far as mexican immigration is concerned, many that are here legally do go out to look for labor jobs that American citizens don't want to do. They do contribute to society in that aspect. As long as the people who do immigrate to this country contribute to helping America grow and prosper, then there sholud be no reason to deny these people the right to enter our country, as long as our own citizens have job positions first. America is there to help others find a better lifestyle and a better future when it's own citizens are struggling to find their own future bright. In my opinion and not to sound bias, we sholud be helped before immigrants.

I have just called the Natchez county prison on behalf of a 6 year old girl's mom who needed help tracing her husband. I'm the girl's teacher and speak Spanish. We have are trying to get information about what will happen to him and are not finding any answers.

He is serving 1 year for a DUI????? And awaiting deportation. This is unethical treatment of people and an abuse to the taxpayer. Even if you strongly oppose illegal immigration are taxpayer dollars have supported this CCA company to abuse the rights of an individual. It is maddening.

If anyone has any suggestions for how we can find more information about my student's father, I would appreciate it.

As a Mississippi education official, I am appalled at what H.B. 488 requires our state's schools to do. Section 4 of this bill, if signed into law, will require educators to ask questions of children and their families that are prohibited by the U.S. Supreme Court's 1982 decision in "Plyler vs. Doe." For over a decade I have attended conferences and meetings sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Education in which our state's educators have been warned against infringing upon our students' educational rights and doing anything that might "chill" their access to the public schools. There is no doubt that our new governor would sign this bill into law should it successfully pass through the legislature. He, himself, advocated for these actions when he was state auditor. Now, as an educator, I will be forced to make a grave decision: to be an advocate for the students under my charge, put my job at risk, and refuse to be a party to what this bill would require; or to fully comply with this bill's requirements and sit back and watch as we effectively "chill" our students' access to our schools.

Not everyone agrees with the anti-immigration legislation. We do need immigration reform, but this is not the solution. Politicians today , in Ms. and nationally are so out of touch. How did we ever bounce back from Katrina without the undocumented workforce that worked so compassionately helping the people of Ms. and La. I guess we are quick to forget times like those. I guess it is ignorance that causes hate bills like these to be created. Some of my best and most trusted friends are illegal Hispanics, who crossed the border as teenagers seeking a better life for their families. I have never known more trustworthy or truer friends than they are. I wish I could do more to help the cause.

Bravo, Bill; Brava, Patricia. Congratulations on MIRA's challenging work on behalf of immigrants and your hard-fought success in Mississippi.
Bill also supported Mexican-American farmworkers in their long march from South Texas to the state capital of Austin back in 1967, supporting our leadership who sought to publicize the terrible working conditions and miserable wages of campesinos in Texas. His commitment and energy to help undocumented workers should serve as a role model for the mindless, xenophobic politicians of Alabama, Arizona and, yes, Texas.

I happened to read the front page of the Clarion-Ledger Friday morning and saw the article "Immigration advocates rally". Theodore Gilmore Bilbo may have been a racist as Mr. Chandler is reported saying in the article. I just don't see how you can infer the Law in Arizona is a racists law. Coming to the USA by crossing the border, without proper documentation is ILLEGAL. I will support State Senator Lee Yancey in his effort to draft a similar bill for Mississippi.I will also support other state reprensentatives who happen to be like minded.

                                   Good Luck
