Critical Preparations for 2014 Legislative Session Underway

Mississippi’s 2014 Legislative Session begins on January 7th, and we’re preparing for action on a number of key issues. Our annual Civic Engagement day at the Capitol is Wednesday, January 22nd, and we are forming strategies to address the legislative issues at hand. While we’ll likely be facing opposition from anti-immigrant camps, 2014 appears to be a year in which we can gain some serious ground for immigrants and workers in areas like healthcare, education, and worker’s comp.

Unity Conference A Huge Success!

MIRA’s 7th Annual Unity Conference Criticizes Mexico and the United States for Victimizing Millions with their “War on Drugs,” Contributing to Forced Migration
Sponsored by religious, union, community and civil rights organizations, the 7th Annual MIRA/SCLC Unity Conference organized by the Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance, “CRIMMIGRATION: The Tragic Consequences of U.S. Drug Policies on Families and Youth,”  featured two leading opponents of the war on drugs.

Seattle Mayor Announces Support for Young Immigrants Eligible for Work Visas

Today, Mayor McGinn announced new City efforts to support young people eligible for work authorizations through the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) policy launched by President Barack Obama in June 2012. Individuals age 18 and over can now call the Seattle City Light Service Center at (206) 684-3000 and have their names added to the utility bill for their home, helping to provide a paper trail to prove residency.
